Teeth Whitening Q&A

What is teeth whitening?

Teeth whitening is the process of lightening dark or discolored teeth. This cosmetic dentistry procedure enhances your appearance and can ramp up your self-confidence, making it easy to smile with pride.

What are the options for teeth whitening?

Sabrina E. Mickel, DDS, offers two options for convenient teeth whitening, including:

In-office whitening

For in-office whitening, the team uses the Philips Zoom!® system. With the Zoom! system, you can whiten your teeth by up to eight shades in only one visit to the office. The system combines a powerful hydrogen peroxide whitening gel with a special activating light to produce fast results.

Treatment consists of gel application and light exposure and then repeating the process twice for a total of three 15-minute treatment sessions (total treatment time 45 minutes).

The team can adjust the treatment according to your tooth sensitivity level and apply a sensitivity-reducing gel afterward to prevent any minor discomfort. After your in-office whitening appointment, the team may recommend a home whitening kit to help you maintain your results.

Whitening at home

Sabrina E. Mickel, DDS, also offers a take-home teeth whitening option. With this type of whitening, you fill custom-made trays with a whitening gel. Because they’re made just for your mouth, the gel disperses properly over all your teeth, and you get even results.

The gel contains peroxide and hydroxyl radicals that lift stains from your teeth, along with ingredients that combat gum sensitivity and ensure comfort. Teeth whitening at home usually takes 10-14 days, but you’ll probably notice whiter teeth in as little as three days.

Both in-office and home whitening can give you great results. If you’re looking for the most dramatic and immediate change, in-office Zoom! whitening is a great option. But, if you don’t mind waiting a little longer to see results, you might like the convenience of whitening at home.

How should I prepare for teeth whitening?

The best way to prepare for teeth whitening is a dental cleaning and checkup to ensure there aren’t any issues you need to address beforehand.

If you’re ready to schedule your teeth whitening, simply ask the team to book your whitening immediately after your routine cleaning and dental exam.
